FAQ

Waveland House, Tortola, Frequently Asked Questions:

Does Waveland accommodate children?
Waveland has railings built to minimum requirements to allow for the view (visible in many of our photos).  Because of this we do not recommend the house for small children. Not only are we concerned for the safety of children, but we do not want the parents to have a stressful vacation because of this. If you do not feel this is applicable to your family or if you have any other questions, please let us know.

What is the best way to get to Tortola?
Several large air carriers connect to Beef Island, Tortola (EIS)  through San Juan. The house is about 15 miles from the airport. Or you can fly direct into St. Thomas, USVI (STT) and take a ferry to West End, Tortola, about 3 miles from the house.  If you choose the St Thomas route, be sure to book an early flight, as the ferry service stops with nightfall.  You will want to check the ferry schedule to coordinate with your flight arrival so you can be sure to get over to the island in the same day. Note: if your flight is late, take any ferry going to the island of Tortola, check with the taxi driver for info on other ferries or charters going over to the island.

Do you recommend a rental car agency?
If you are flying straight into Beef Island, Hertz (284/495-4405) and National (284/494-3197) both have a rental agency at the airport.  If you are flying into St. Thomas and ferrying over to West End, there is also a Hertz there (same number as above) or a couple of other places near by that you may get a better rate with. Denzel Clyne Car Rental (284/495-4900) or Jerry's Car Rental (284/495-4111) are the ones we have used.  General rule:  if you fly into Beef Island, rent from the East End, if you ferry over, rent from the West End.  If they have to pick you up at the airport, please ask in advance if there is an additional fee. This goes for most any situation that involves money on the island.

How far is the town and is there a grocery store?
It is 8 miles to Road Town, there is a large grocery store there, Riteway and right next to it is Cash and Carry which is a 'Costco' type store for discount beverages, etc. There is also a great little store for fresh produce and very good frozen fish, chicken, and meats in town called Supa Value. They are both on the main road through town, from the house you go around the round-about, Supa Valu is on the left, past the only red light in town is Riteway and Cash and Carry on the left. We usually go to town once a week to stock up on basics but there is a great little store in Soper's Hole Marina, right near the house, Harbour Market, also has many gourmet items. A little pricey but very useful.  It also has a deli and makes fresh bread daily. At the bottom of Zion Hill road, take a right on Queens Hwy (known as the low road) to the sign for Soper's hole, turn left, go over a small bridge and turn right into marina area.  There is a health food store in Road Town, Natures Way, with many organic items and supplements.   Note: don't hesitate to take advantage of little tables set up on the side of the road with fresh produce, local Tortolian's selling the extras from their garden at very reasonable prices.

How far is the nearest beach?
Three of the most popular beaches are within easy reach of Waveland. Apple Bay (a popular surfing beach) which you see from the deck, is a three minute drive down the hill (7/10ths of a mile). And just a little further West are Long Bay and Smugglers Cove beaches, the latter having an excellent reputation for snorkeling. In the islands center North shore, are the beautiful beaches of Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay. At the Eastern end of Tortola there are three beaches, Lambert Beach where Lambert Bay Beach resort is situated, Josiah's Bay and Long Bay on Beef Island. There are many beautiful and famous beaches an easy ferry ride away to neighbor islands of Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda. You can find more information in the Welcome guide or on the internet.

How are the sleeping arrangements set up?
First floor is the master, usually for the host. It is a king and has his and her bathrooms with shared shower. Second floor is the guest bedroom which has a queen sized bed and a pull out sofa bed. Tight when it's pulled out, but there is also an office (very small) on that floor where the computer is. And there is a twin sized air mattress in the cabinet if you need that. Third floor is the loft which has a queen sized bed also. Bathroom on second floor for both. The living room has a 12 ft. sofa that is very comfortable and the doors between the living room and dining and kitchen close and you can access the kitchen from the deck without disturbing those sleeping in the living if you need to do that. We've had people in all locations and it does work. Most comfortable with 6 but we've had a lot more.

Does Waveland have air conditioning?
The master bedroom and main guest room are both equiped with air conditioners that are mostly used in the summertime for sleeping.  Waveland was designed to take advantage of the Caribbean trade winds and most doors and windows open onto the deck areas and capture the wonderful breezes.  During the winter, you'll find yourself grabbing a blanket at night.

How will we get to Waveland and into the house once we arrive?

Please note that we have a Welcome Guide at the house upon your arrival with recommendations of some of our favorite beaches, bars, restaurants, etc...
